BIS registration for screen protectors

BIS registration for screen protectors is set to become an important compliance requirement for smartphone accessory manufacturers, importers and brands operating in India.

The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) issued S.O. 5190(E) on 21 September 2026, amending the Electronics and Information Technology Goods (Requirement of Compulsory Registration) Order, 2021.

The amendment adds Screen Protectors for Smartphones as a new entry in the schedule. The applicable Indian Standard is IS 19348:2025 – Glass Screen Protector — Specification.

Most importantly, the new requirement will apply from 1 April 2027.

For manufacturers and importers, that means the preparation window has already started.

Businesses should review the official BIS notification

1. Understand the 1 April 2027 Deadline

The effective date gives manufacturers and brands time to prepare.

However, waiting until the final few weeks could create pressure around testing, documentation and application processing.

A planned BIS registration for screen protectors strategy should begin well before the deadline.

2. Check Whether Your Product Falls Within Scope

The Gazette identifies the notified product as “Screen Protectors for Smartphones” and associates it with IS 19348:2025 – Glass Screen Protector — Specification.

Manufacturers should therefore first determine whether their specific product falls within the scope of the notified standard.

This step is especially important for businesses supplying different materials, designs or variants of screen-protection products.

3. Understand BIS CRS Scheme II

The compliance framework is linked to the Electronics and Information Technology Goods (Requirement of Compulsory Registration) Order, 2021.

Businesses unfamiliar with the BIS framework can also review NKG’s internal guide on BIS Certification Schemes in India.

Understanding the correct scheme early helps manufacturers plan testing, documentation and registration in the right sequence.

4. Start Testing Preparation Early

Testing is one of the most important parts of BIS registration for screen protectors.

Manufacturers should review the requirements of IS 19348:2025, assess their existing test data and plan any required product testing before the implementation date.

If a product requires modification to meet the standard, finding that out early can protect production and launch timelines.

5. Review Manufacturing and Product Details

Before applying, businesses should review the manufacturing location, model details, product variants and technical information that may be relevant to the registration process.

Inconsistent information can lead to unnecessary queries or delays.

For overseas manufacturers, early planning becomes even more important because production, testing and Indian market-entry timelines must work together.

6. Align Imports With the New Requirement

Importers should not treat BIS registration for screen protectors as an isolated regulatory task.

Purchase orders, production schedules, shipment dates and inventory planning should all consider the 1 April 2027 effective date.

The objective is to avoid products reaching India when mandatory compliance requirements have already taken effect.

7. Use the Preparation Window Wisely

The strongest strategy is simple:

Scope Assessment → Standard Review → Testing → Documentation → BIS Registration → Import Planning → Ongoing Compliance

Manufacturers that begin early have more time to resolve technical or documentation issues without disrupting commercial plans.

What Should Businesses Do Now?

The Gazette notification has already established the product category, applicable Indian Standard and effective date.

For smartphone-accessory manufacturers, importers and brands, BIS registration for screen protectors should therefore become part of 2026–27 compliance planning.

Businesses can also explore NKG’s BIS regulatory services for support with BIS registration planning and compliance.

The deadline is 1 April 2027.

The best time to prepare is before compliance becomes urgent.
