FSSAI Compliance for Ayurvedic Products

Introduction

FSSAI compliance for Ayurvedic products has taken a major step forward with the release of a new approved product list under the Ayurveda Aahara framework. Issued on 25 July 2025, this update by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) simplifies product classification and streamlines compliance for manufacturers, consultants, and Ayurvedic brands.

Let’s unpack what’s new and what you need to do next.

What Is Ayurveda Aahara and Why Is It Regulated?

FSSAI has developed a dedicated regulatory path for Ayurveda-based food products under the FSSAI Ayurveda Aahara Regulations, notified in 2022. These rules cover food items inspired by Ayurvedic principles that are intended for dietary consumption, not medicinal use.

This distinct classification was introduced to:

  • Ensure public safety without stifling innovation
  • Avoid overlap with drug regulations under AYUSH
  • Give clarity to Food Business Operators (FBOs)

With the July 2025 update, FSSAI has made it easier to identify approved Ayurveda Aahara Category A Products that don’t require pre-market approval.

July 2025: What’s in the Newly Released FSSAI List?

FSSAI has officially published a Category A list under the Ayurveda Aahara framework. This list includes traditional food products referenced in classical Ayurvedic texts and recognized as safe for general consumption.

The list has been issued with the approval of the Competent Authority at FSSAI, as per official communication.

This update is based on Note (1) under Schedule B of the FSSAI Ayurveda Aahara Regulations, 2022, which empowers the authority to release such a list from time to time.

This is being referred to as the FSSAI List July 2025, and it marks the first centralized release under this format.

Key Highlights:

  • Products listed in Category A are pre-approved for manufacturing.
  • No product-specific approval is required for these, as long as labeling and formulation match classical references.
  • The list was released in consultation with the Ministry of Ayush.

What If My Product Is Not on the List?

Manufacturers wishing to launch a product not featured in the current list can apply for its inclusion. Here’s how:

Process to Request Inclusion:

  1. Refer to Authoritative Texts
Use Schedule A books referenced under Ayurveda Food FSSAI Guidelines.
  2. Submit Documentation to FSSAI
Send relevant scientific literature or Ayurvedic references justifying your product’s classification.
  3. Await Review and Listing
FSSAI will review and notify approved changes in subsequent updates.

For queries or inclusion requests, FBOs may contact: ayurveda-aahara@fssai.gov.in.
